Getting a lot of spam registrations suddenly

    So I run the website for a small running club in the UK and have been using the plugin to stop spam registrations (whenever we get a new member they register with the site to get member-only information). Lately we started getting hit with a lot of spam registrations, getting to 1 every 3-5 minutes. I changed the reCaptcha version back to v2 Checkbox (it was v3) and that seemed to work, limiting it to 1 every few days or so. Lately however it’s getting just as bad on v2 as it was on v3, so I’ve had to switch off user registration altogether.

    When I checked my Google reCaptcha dashboard I’m getting the following errors:

    v3: “We detected that your site is not verifying reCAPTCHA tokens. Please see our developer site for more information.”

    v2 Checkbox: “We detected that your site is verifying reCAPTCHA passed solutions less than 50% of the time. This could indicate a problem with your integration with reCAPTCHA. Please see our developer site for more information.”

    Any ideas? It has been working reasonably well for some time now, but it seems like something is broken now somewhere without me apparently doing anything.

    Hi @markrbower

    Can you try going to WP Admin > Captcha 4WP > Settings > General Settings and for the “How to handle failed submissions” check if it’s set to “Proceed with submission”. If it is, switch it to “Fail submission”.

    Let me know if you keep getting spam registrations after that.

    Thanks for the quick response, however it was already set to Fail Submission. I’ve enabled user registration an hour or so ago and had 3 spam registrations so far (also saw yours!).

    You’re welcome.

    I did get the message that the captcha needs to be solved when I tried to go around the captcha, but somehow it got through. Let me look into this and I’ll get back to you.

    Any update on this? I turned off registration for a while, then switched it back on and the spam seemed to stop. Overnight though it has started again (50+ since midnight), so I guess the issue still persists. I know I’ve not seen any updates or fixes being pushed.

    I’m so sorry for the wait.

    We tried to replicate the issue on our test setups but couldn’t get it to happen.

    Can you submit a support request over at https://captcha4wp.com/submit-ticket/

    In the license key field just enter “markbower”.

    That’s for the premium support, it’ll go faster there and we’ll have some questions about the specifics of your setup, so better to go with a private conversation instead of a public forum.
