Getting a folder listing, index.php not displaying automatically

Greetings,

I just got finished with a WordPress installation, everything seemed to work fine until the end – instead of displaying the index.php automatically, I get a directory listing at my site. I installed it in a subdirectory on my webpage.

I browsed the forums and saw that I should make an .htaccess file in the same folder as my wordpress install. I did that, but it didn’t seem to help.
