# Getting 404 Error

 * When I tried to edit the .htaccess file in WP dashboard, I get a 404 error.
 * Is it bug from your end or doing something wrong from my end?

 * Thanks for reaching out regarding your `.htaccess` file. The permissions to access
   and show the `.htaccess` file is set by the web hosting provider. We ask that
   you please reach out to your web hosting provider and confirm that your site 
   has an `.htaccess` file as some set-ups do not. Also, ensure that the file has
   the right permissions so it can then be displayed in WordPress > SEO > Tools.

 * Previously it was working and current file numeric value is 644. This file is
   showing through WordPress > SEO > Tools.
 * Same file I can edit through FTP only but still counter the problem.

 * We’re not sure as to why when accessing the .htaccess file through the Yoast 
   SEO file editor results in a 404, but we recommend reaching out to your web hosting
   provider.
