Support » Plugin: The Events Calendar » Generating many Soft 404 errors

  • Decent plug-in, however seems to have become over-complicated – the real reason for the low rating is the huge number of soft 404 errors it’s generating, tried to fix the issue but am uninstalling it as it seems to be an ongoing issue that developers are aware of but not addressing.

Howdy @webgalway and thanks for chiming in and sharing your review. Even though we strive for more stars and better experiences, your feedback is helpful and I appreciate you taking the time to write it up.

I’m curious: would you be willing to share some light on your experience? Specifically: at what point in using the plugin did overcomplicated? We’re trying to gather feedback from our users as we work towards our next big release, and your insight here would be a huge help to make the next release even better. 🙂

As a side note on the 404 issues, I definitely hear you. The thing about soft 404s is that they are tricky by nature for a calendar properly function the way it’s intended. We have put a ton of thought and effort into the way we handle and limit soft 404s with intentional uses of noindex tags to send the proper SEO signals to crawlers. We’ve also made our templating and codebase flexible so that this functionality can be tweaked for other use cases as well. It’s also worth noting that the way themes and other plugins interact with The Events Calendar can have an impact here as well that overrides the efforts we’ve put in. In other words, it’s not quite a one-size-fits-all scenario and we are indeed doing everything on our end to see it through.

I’m curious to hear your thoughts though. How would you rather we present this info and how would you prefer we approach noindex and robot tags? Or what pages should we stop producing? Your feedback might help us see another angle to this that we perhaps haven’t considered and we’d be happy to take it in for consideration.

Totally understandable if you’re uninterested in providing that level of feedback or don’t have time. But if you’ve got a second we’d appreciate it and would take it into account as we work to improve the plugin. Our goal is to make the plugin more useful to all our customers…and if we can earn a full 5 stars from folks like yourself along the way, that’d be a nice added bonus.

    Cheers!
