Generate thumbnails from custom field image url

    Hi,

    i’m trying to generate thumbnails from a image url that is stored in a custom field for each post.
    So i have a big image and i want to resize it to a smaller resolution, without using timthumb or a plugin.
    Can anyone help me out?
