[resolved] general question about theme templates and modifying php (3 posts)

I'm developing a template using the sandbox theme as my base, obviously working on modifying the CSS. However to get the effect I want I need to modify some of the php files.. now with sandbox as my template is that possible?
I thought I could just upload the files i'd modified to the directory of my theme and it could use them.. but it doesn't seem to, so I guess I will have to upload all the files and just act like it's a complete theme.. which is rather unfortunate for portability and change-trackingt reasons.
Am I missing something, or do I have to upload all the files to my theme dir and not use sandbox as my template anymore?

I don't fully understand your question.

If you want to use the Sandbox theme you do need to upload *all* of it as a theme to your WordPress installation. However, you only need re-upload any files you actually modify. There's no technical reason to upload all the theme templates again when modifying say just header.php.

If this is about using *some* of that theme's templates with your own theme (whatever that may be), as long as the layouts generally match in the templates then I see no reason why not. However, note Sandbox sports a number of theme-specific functions. These would be defined in the theme's functions.php document.

thanks for the reply. i was just waiting to modify some of the php files but leave all the original sandbox ones intact on the site to make upgrading/using other sandbox based themes more intuitive. But I've decided that's not enough of an issue to endure the hassle of not just modifying the files directly ;)
