• Hello to all my friends on this platform.I am a newbie blogger from New delhi,I have just started blogging by self 1-2 months ago. While i was creating pages and posts or content for my blog in wordpress using default theme.I tried indexing using Webmaster tool. After using it i faced a problem( General HTTP error: 404 not found) and that was something which i am unable to solve in last few days.

Please see screenshot for that.I searched in google,Some people saying it is due to theme choosen or any plugin which are not coded nicely.I am confused as right now i am choosing default free theme,Premium theme can be choosen once i will have enough content on my blog. Also i read somewhere that google can penalise my blog because of havin such kind of error. Now i am afraid of that also as this is my first attempt and i don wanna such kind of problems in initial part of my career in blogging.

    blog url : http://www.crickreporter.com/
    sitemap: http://www.crickreporter.com/page-sitemap.xml

    errors: http://www.crickreporter.com/post_tag-sitemap.xml
    http://www.crickreporter.com/ipl-updates/

Can anyone advise me over what is wrong with this kind of error and how can i improve it?Is there any guide from where i can study from nitial stages how to work with this kind of things carefully and as a beginner try to avoid anything that could hamper my chances of indexing in google.

    Thanks

  • There are two ways to deal with 404s. You can remove the link to that URL. Or you can put something at that URL for people and bots to find, so they don’t get a 404. (actually there is a third way: you can write a re-direct to bounce from the bad URL to a good one.)

I see you are using Yoast to generate sitemaps. If you go in the Yoast settings, you can tell it not to generate a sitemap for post_tags. Then there will be no link to it, and Google will not get a 404.

I don’t know what ipl-updates are, or why there would be a link to it. But the solution is to find that link and remove it. Or, you can make a page called ipl-updates. Then you will not get a 404 at that location.
