    @davidanderson

    Please advise on this because the first fines are now being issued in EU against non compliant companies.

    will you be making encryption a feature of this free plugin or we will have to stop using the plugin because we all now face substantial fines if we use the free version due to lack of encryption

    Thanks

    Hi,

    I can confirm that we have no current plans to put the paid version’s encryption capabilities into the free version of the plugin. If you are running a profit-generating business, then we definitely encourage you to look at the business-friendly features of our paid products.

    If you want to discuss that further, please do use the form on our website – https://updraftplus.com/ask-a-pre-sales-question/ (wordpress.org do not want questions relating to commercial products asked on their website – https://make.wordpress.org/support/handbook/forum-welcome/#do-not-post-about-commercial-products).

    Hi,

    Whether the free version is suitable for a business aiming for GDPR compliance will depend upon what that business is storing in its WordPress database (particularly, whether it stores PII of EU users), and where it is storing its backups. It will be suitable for some businesses, whereas others will likely determine that they need to encrypt the database using a paid version. All businesses subject to the GDPR will want to make an assessment of their own situation.

    As far as I am aware there is no competitor product of the same type (storing your backup in storage that the end-user controls) with database encryption available at all, whether free or paid. I’d certainly be interested to hear if you know otherwise.

    David
