 * Hi,
 * I’m preparing my website for GDPR. Does WordPress collect data on visitors that
   I need to tell them about? Cookies, ip addresses, etc. If so, I’m assuming these
   need to be stated in my privacy policy – is there a list of what data WordPress
   collects?
 * Thanks,
 * Gareth.

 * WordPress will introduce tools to assist with GDPR compatibility in 4.9.6, but
   GDPR compatibility for specific plugins and themes is up to their developers.
   We expect the tools will improve in future releases, but you, as the site owner/
   operator, are the one responsible for ensuring compliance the GDPR and any local
   variations that may be introduced.
 * Follow [https://wordpress.org/news](https://wordpress.org/news) to keep updated
   on what WordPress is doing in upcoming releases, and look to local sources for
   general GDPR questions.

 * Hi Steve,
 * The tracking/analytics I refer to is the service that forms part of WordPress
   itself, not Google analytics or anything else. So I was asking what data WordPress
   collects via that core service.
 * Thanks,

 * This is the based privacy policy page as of 4.9.6-rc1: [https://bertha.sterndata.com/privacy-policy/](https://bertha.sterndata.com/privacy-policy/)
 * I expect it may change somewhat prior to release.

 * There is no such service. If you’re using Jetpack’s “WP Stats”, see [https://jetpack.com/support/privacy/](https://jetpack.com/support/privacy/)
   and [https://en.support.wordpress.com/automattic-gdpr/](https://en.support.wordpress.com/automattic-gdpr/)

 * Well, I’m not that technical, so my apologies if I misdescribed the service.
   However, I’m actually simply interested in whatever data WordPress collects so
   I can inform my visitors via my privacy policy.
 * Thank you for the links.

 * The links tell you everything.
 * WordPress, the software, doesn’t collect any data except what users put into
   it. It doesn’t have stats, or tracking, or anything like that built in.
 * So, when you ask about data collection, then the question isn’t about the WordPress
   software, it’s about you, and what you collect, and what other software, like
   plugins, that you use to collect it.
 * Everything WordPress gets is something you can see in the admin pages. So, you
   should know what it has, because it shows it all to you.
 * Edit: also, just to clarify, WordPress is not a “service”. It’s software. We
   don’t have your data, you do. We don’t host your site, you do, or you pay some
   hosting service for that. Basically, WordPress is like Microsoft Excel, but for
   websites, not spreadsheets. You own your own data. We have no access to your
   data.
