Support » Plugin: NextGEN Gallery Optimizer » Garbage

  • This plugin is garbage. Especially since I paid 15 dollars for the “premium” version. There is no difference in site performance, trust me. The only thing this accomplished was removing compatibility with mobile users.

    I want a refund.

Ok. Well the same above applies to the free version. Don’t waste your time.

    Hi miranda9109,

    Thanks for your feedback.

From what you’ve described, it sounds like you may be experiencing some sort of conflict between the plugin and your theme, or perhaps another plugin (especially in regards to mobile compatibility). If you’d like to send me an email with a link to your site (my address is on Optimizer’s main page), I’d be more than happy to take a look for you.

If I may ask, which tool are you using to monitor your site’s performance? GTMetrix? WebPageTest? The performance gain you’ll see will vary depending on what is actually loading on any given page, but you can set up a simple test to eliminate as many variables as possible and measure the results…

For the following test case, I’ve just created a blank test post, set NextGEN Gallery on default settings (with Shutter lightbox effect enabled) and have run it through WebPageTest (using its presets). For simplicity, I’m using the bundled Twenty Twelve theme.

This blank test page is representative of all the pages on your site that don’t contain any NextGEN content, yet have to load it’s scripts and stylesheets anyway. Optimizer removes these, and the results speak for themselves…1.159s with Optimizer ON vs 1.892s with Optimizer OFF (a 0.733 second improvement on first page views).

Note: Even with identical server locations, browser version and bandwidth, the numbers will differ between tests due to Internet traffic, server load etc. However, after further testing of the above, subsequent results consistently showed between a half second to one full second improvement in page load times for this test configuration.

If you have lots of pages without galleries or slideshows, this would certainly help improve your site’s user experience on the whole, and potentially increase pages per visit as a result.

Please feel free to replicate this test on your own server, and see what results you get. But please note, Optimizer is designed to optimize NextGEN Gallery exclusively. It will not remove unnecessary scripts and stylesheets from bloated themes, and it will not disable needlessly abundant or redundant plugins…but it does make a very good start to your speed optimization efforts.

    Kind regards,
