Support » Fixing WordPress » Gallery with gallery caption does not align correctly

  • I have read many posts complaining about Image Gallery alignment. Some of those post go back to 2018. But they all fix problems with image alignment.

    I have a gallery with 2 images. Both images and gallery have captions. Image size is set to medium, gallery alignment is set to center.

    The result is that images are aligned to the left. Image captions are correctly aligned at the bottom center of images. But this appears to be the only thing aligned correctly. Images themselves are aligned to the left and gallery caption is located not at the bottom of images, but “sticks” at the right of those images, also algined to the left. Two images and gallery caption appear to be all in one line aligned to the left and a bunch of white empty space on the right.

    Is this intended behavior? Any suggestions on how to get gallery and its caption aligned correctly?

    Please provide a link to a page on your site where we can see this. Thanks. Note: Your link will be public and we will not later remove it.

    I found a workaround to my problem myself. I my case I had to add few CSS lines like this:

    .blocks-gallery-grid {
    	margin-left: auto;
    	margin-right: auto;
    	}
    .blocks-gallery-caption {
    	width: 100%;
    	}

    So far so good. It even works ok with right, left and wide alignments. Gallery captions remain nicely centered at the bottom of gallery. I hope this doesn’t mess upp anything else in other parts of the site.

    I don’t want to recreate this problemon anymore on my current site. So, whne I have some extra time, I may set this problem up on my other site to show the problem. It still would be interesting to know if this is an intended behavior or a bug or something else is causing it? If it’s a bog, there might be a hope that it will be fixed for others.

    Since you are using gallery block, you should not associate any of the other answers before version 5.0 came out in Dec. 2018 with this. Before, the gallery was only shortcode, not block. They are very different. And not all themes have updated to handle the new block stuff.

    Here is the link to the page you can see the effect I am talking about.

    /* this centers the gallery */
    ul.blocks-gallery-grid {
        margin: 0 auto;
    }
    /* this centers the gallery caption below */
    figcaption.blocks-gallery-caption {
        display: block;
        width: 100%;
    }

    Thank you @sterndata for your input! Your solution is very similar to the one I suggested, but as I see it has more precise selectors and adds display: block to the gallery caption.

    I wonder that why this CSS is not in original WP CSS and it is required to add it manually? Does it work normally in some other cases?
