• Hi guys, I hope this post is in the right sub.

I wanted to start a new website based pretty much on photo galleries.

In each article, the visitor will find some text (1-2 rows, tops) and then images.

I’ve been using wordpress for around 5 years now, but I’ve limited my experience to merely text posts. I’ve no idea how to optimize images and how to handle them with galleries.

I’ve documented myself online, but I can’t seem to figure out which is the best plugin to use for images, making sure the page still loads fast enough.

I’ve wondered if going with the basic wordpress gallery would be a good idea, you know, for shorter loading times.

I have in mind something like the Huffpost or mashable for the galleries, but I didn’t find a plugin to replicate that (image + description and chance to put ads on the side).

I’m here to hear your suggestions. If you had to run a website based on photo galleries, how would you run it, in terms of plugins used?

Any response is deeply appreciated, thank you.

  • Hi kfelix,

Ideally, it’s always better to use native WordPress “features” rather than adding plugins. You could start with the native (built-in) gallery features built into WordPress and see how they work for you. Depending on the look you want (which is controlled by your theme), you may need to tweak the CSS to get the styling you want.
