 * Good Evening,
 * In WordPress, I wish to change the default gravatar and found instructions to
   do this in functions.php. Would this be considered changing a core file? I’ve
   read the file is not mandatory, but just want to make sure when upgrading to
   WP 3.0 for instance that this change to functions.php will not be overwritten
   with a new version.
 * Thank you!
 * Cheers,
    Christopher

 * functions.php is in your theme. Any changes you make to your theme are safe. (
   as long as its not the default WP theme…..never edit the default WP theme, copy
   and rename it…as it gets replaced on upgrade)
 * so in short, you’re safe
