Full On Comment Spam Attack Bordering on DDOS (7 posts)

I'm wondering if anyone has a quick solution.

Right now as I write this, some moron is attacking my blog with comment spam, to the tune of over 300 per hour, and it's been going on for over 4 hours. After trying to keep up with the attack for 45 minutes I went to full moderation of comments and trackbacks.

I've even tried banning the IP's but it doesn't work.

Short of renaming all the comment-related WP files for a while, does anyone have a quick fix? I'm genuinely concerned that my host may look at this as a DDOS attack since the site is slow to load while this is going on.

For future consideration to the developers - this type of thing may be something to look at in future versions of WP.

I would sincerely appreciate any and all replies to this thread. Thanks.

Install that - very very easy.

  3. The quick fix is Bad Behavior (as Podz has linked to above). I'm under the same attack wave as you are right now, but Bad Behavior is taking care of all of it, and at very little impact to the server.

Yep, I agree Bad Behavior has stopped over 400 attempts on one of my blogs and over 1000 on another just in the last 2 hours.

Thank you so much everyone. The attack has subsided since my post above, but I'll be installing Bad Behavior ASAP.

Now back to deleting all that crap...

Hi, I have no idea if anyone has tried this type of comment spam blocking but I wrote a very easy to use flash-based comment spam blocker.

If anyone finds it useful let me know, because I'd like to add it to the codex for others to benifit from it as well (if it works of course).

  7. It's nice, but it won't stop trackback spam, which is what this current wave is.
