FTP/SFTP and storage? [WP automatic upgrade plugin]

  • The WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin asks for my FTP details. I don’t have FTP, just SFTP. Will it work?

Also, could you explain how the plugin is going to access my server without storing the credentials?

It would be nice to have a “no ftp” version of the plugin. I use wget on the command-line to download my wordpress versions.

  • Yeah, I have been debating whether or not to install this plugin because of the FTP issue: I keep thinking to myself “what on earth does this thing need FTP for?” Sounds suspicious to me. Is there some other access it needs besides an HTTP connection for the latest update?

The plugin requires ftp access to adjust file permissions so that the upgrade can actually go through (by default your webserver may not be allowed to change files).

I would like to set my installation to do the upgrade without FTP. I’ve tried temporarily setting the permissions of the wordpress directory (and sub-directories) open to everyone, but that doesn’t work.

Any help on what I’d need to set up would be appreciated.

Yea furreal, does anyone have FTP? This is borderline ridiculous, really.

I’m surprised that there is no sftp option as well… maybe it could be added via a plugin, but it seems like it should be integrated.

Not only that, but at the very least, you should be able to give WordPress the directory name. Not every FTP account has their website in the root directory, quite often its wordpress/ or public_html/.

SFTP or SCP shouldn’t be that difficult to implement in PHP either.
