• I am using a secure file transfer to upload the files to my server. I have a directory for the website, with the website’s domain name, and inside that I have a directory called htdocs. I want to install wordpress without an extra wordpress directory, just the files.

Do I need to put it into the htdocs directory or should it work just in the domainname directory?

I have the files in just domainname right now and I’m getting a 403 Forbidden error…

I had it in domainname/htdocs/wordpress and got to the install page by going to http://www.domainname.com and clicking on the wordpress link under the htdocs link, but I deleted the files and directories because I didn’t want that random text file-looking page to be the homepage of my website. Should I have left it like that and would it have resolved after I installed?

Ok, trial and error over three days finally panned out:

wordpress files do need to be in the htdocs folder without the wordpress directory

now I just have to figure out the hostname etc…
