• I’m stumped!

I’m using Windows 7 64 bit, and this is my first time setting up a WordPress instance. I’ve got an account with one.com and everything’s gone well up to getting my WordPress downloaded files onto my site via FTP…

I’ve created a test folder to drag and drop the downloaded files into called “here”. I can access the folder just fine after creating it, and I can write the downloaded WordPress files to it just fine. However, once the files are in there, I can’t open the folder again. I can’t even delete the folder to start again. I keep getting a “Connection timed out” error and “Failed to retrieve directory listing” error.

I’m using FileZilla and have messed about with Active and Passive connections as per the forums. I’ve turned off Windows firewall, I’ve turned off my router firewall and tried all combinations of them being off an on. I’ve even tried using FTPSurfer to no avail. And now I’m stuck.

Is it something to do with the types of files in there? I shouldn’t have thought so, but I can drop any other type of files in the folder without a problem, but as soon as I drop the WordPress PHP files in, it confuses itself.

    Thanks folks…

Minor update – my friend who is using FileZilla on a Macbook Pro (Lion) can get on and edit just fine from his home (not my network).

  • File type shouldn’t matter. FTP really doesn’t care. It is strict file transfer, though you can corrupt some types of files sometimes.

I use FileZilla on 64-bit Windows 7 all the time. That shouldn’t be an issue. The problem is elsewhere.

I was convinced that you had a permissions problem before you said your friend could edit just fine. Now I am not sure, but it is worth checking. Make sure permissions are 755 for directories and 644 for files.

Or if you want to temporarily set things to 777, you can do that, but do not leave them 777. It is very dangerous.

You can’t change user and group ownership with FileZilla, but unless you have a VPS or better chances are you can’t change those at all.

Have you asked your host about this? I would if I were you.

Thanks a lot for the reply, I’ll see if changing permissions does anything.

I’ve managed to get my site working now by using my USB Internet dongle, worked perfectly first time. Not really sure to make of that other than there can’t be a problem with my host but maybe there is a problem with my router or ISP? The router I use I a Belkin n+, which I bought to replace the crummy one my ISP sent me. Aside from changing the wireless name and password it’s entirely as it came from the manufacturer!

Is there anything I should be asking my ISP or any settings on my router that could be causing this?

    Thanks again

Your ISP may or may not be willing to help with your router, but you can ask. They should be able to help analyze the FTP traffic though.

Still being baffled by this one. I’ve messed about with my router settings no end and even got my IT Support buddy to have a look – he’s convinced it’s firewall related but I’m not so sure as I’ve tried disabling it and forwarding ports 20, 21 and even 22 to be sure!

The plot thickened yesterday when I tried to connect using Diet Coda (iPad app for editing files directly on the server, via FTP). I can log into the server itself and can access OTHER folders and their files, but when it comes to accessing the folder containing the WordPress files, it times out every time. However, when I plug my old router in, I get in no problem. I just do not get it!

I’ve checked and rechecked all router settings between the one that lets me in and the one that doesn’t and I can’t see any differences, apart from the new one is wireless n (even tried disabling that to just b and g, but it had no effect).

I’ve tried setting all files and folders to 777 permissions, but it’s not made a difference so I’ve reverted back to 755.

Throw some more ideas at me if you have any and I’ll give them a whirl!

    Thanks again.

    Solved!

For anyone else (the very rare few) who might have this problem ive now found that it all stems from the Belkin N+ router. The simple fix was to increase the MTU amount to its maximum of 1500.

No idea why this has fixed it but it has. No more connection errors. Hooray!
