FTP credentials
-
From time to time, my sites that uses Jetpack shows a message that asks for FTP credentials to the site. I have no intention to use that (whatever the function is), but how do I stop this annoying message from showing up?

The only thing we’d use FTP for is to keep on hand in case we need to restore your site from VaultPress, our backup product. Are you using the VaultPress plugin on your site? If so, what is the site’s URL? If no, would you please quote the full error?
I am not using VaultPress, and there is not really an error message but a message that asks for the logon information for FTP.
Are you sure it’s coming from Jetpack? WordPress itself will ask for FTP credentials sometimes if there’s an issue with file ownership.
When does the error appear?
I am pretty sure it is Jetpack, but it was a while back I came to that conclusion and I don’t remember how I came to it. It show seemingly random.
Would you please providing a screenshot of what you’re seeing?
1. Take an image screenshot: http://www.take-a-screenshot.org
2. Upload it via Media -> Add New in your blog’s Dashboard: https://codex.wordpress.org/Uploading_Files#To_Upload_a_File_for_Later_Use
3. Click on the file in the Media library.
4. Copy the File URL to the right.
5. Reply here with the File URL.
The next time it show up, I’ll do that.
Thank you! If it takes a while and you end up needing to open a new thread, you can reference this one. Cheers š
Today it showed up again but in a slightly different form – not at the top of the screen but in the statistic view in the panel.

Well, that is indeed strange, but definitely not from us.
That’s WordPress’s FTP dialogue that appears if it can’t install or update plugins/themes via normal procedures. FTP is its fallback, but of course it needs the FTP credentials to proceed.
Now, why it’s appearing inside our Stats widget, that is indeed a mystery.
Are you able to install any other themes or plugins without the prompt appearing?
Everything works fine even without the credentials, and I cannot tell if it appears When I am updating or installing anything. At least not every time, if there is a specific addon that causes the problem I haven’t figured out which one yet. The last addon I updated when it appeared this time was Jetpack to version 6.7 but I am not sure that has anything to do with it.
@fizzgigg have you checked to see whether you’ve got a backup plugin that’s asking for FTP access? Particularly since the message seems to just pop up randomly regardless of what screen you’re on.
I am using both ManageWP (https://orion.managewp.com) and WPMU (http://wpmudev.org) for backups among other things, however The FTP thing only shows up at one out of nine sites. If it has showed on any of the others, the other people have never told me and When I asked they could not remember it happening. And most of them have administrator status, so I don’t think it is a “role thing) (admins se it, editors and below does not).
@fizzgigg You might double check their connection credentials, just in case. And double check your file permissions.
For what it’s worth, I searched for WPMU Dev and your error, and found this:
https://premium.wpmudev.org/forums/topic/connection-information-wordpress-needs-to-access-your-web-serverVery interesting, I have missed that one. I’ll read that more in detail tomorrow, but there seems to be a lot of information to use there.
A massive thanks.
And if that makes no difference, and the message returns, try deactivating plugins one-by-one until the message goes away. That should at least isolate the problem.
