 * Hey guys is it normal when using WordFence to have it ask for FTP credentials?
   When I’m trying to delete a suspicious file or ‘repair’ a file it jumps out to
   a page asking for FTP credentials…no other sites I have WF installed on do this
   so I’m just not sure what to do…Thanks!

 * Hi [@prime-local](https://wordpress.org/support/users/prime-local/),
 * I’d suggest that you google “wordpress is asking for ftp credentials”. You’ll
   see that this is a WordPress issue, not a Wordfence one. And you should get to
   many resources telling you how to handle this issue. From what I could understand(
   I’m not a programmer), it varies depending on server and WP configurations.

 * Hi [@prime-local](https://wordpress.org/support/users/prime-local/),
 * This is likely a permissions issue and if you try logging in to your site via
   FTP/SSH or any file browser your web host is providing, you should hopefully
   be able to remove the files that way. If you can’t then you’ll have to reach
   out to your web host for assistance.
 * You can find some more information in [this thread on WordPress.org](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/plugin-install-asks-for-ftp-details/).
 * Good luck!

 * Hey All 🙂
 * I very much appreciate all the responses but respectfully it doesn’t answer the
   question. Is it normal for WF to request access to FTP? Now before everyone goes
   all sideways on me, I have many sites installed on the SAME server and NO other
   sites are requesting access to FTP to delete or repair files. So what’s triggering
   this install of WF to ask for credentials? I’ve NEVER had to manually enter FTP
   credentials for a WP site to access what it needed via plugin or whatever. Where
   does one even do that in WF / WP?

 * Hi again,
    As cbrandt above explained, Wordfence isn’t requesting access to FTP.
   When you are accessing your site you are always doing so via a specific server
   user. Different users on a sever have access to different things. WordPress is
   asking you to enter FTP credentials because you are attempting to access a file
   you don’t have permission to access via the server user WordPress is currently
   running as.
 * I do not manage your server so I can’t explain why you don’t have access to the
   files. If it’s malware, it could be because whoever placed it there intentionally
   changed permission on the files to prevent you from deleting them.
 * I do not recommend you use the WordPress FTP function to access the files. I
   recommend you use actual FTP or use your web hosts control panel to delete the
   files. There, you will also be able to check owner and permissions on the files.
