Support » Requests and Feedback » Forum rule for plugin/theme suggestions

  • It would be great if there were some sort of rule or guidelines about “what’s the best plugin” or “I need a theme that looks like (often non-WordPress) site”.

There are thousands of plugins and themes, and it is unlikely that anyone knows all of them. (I suppose it’s possible, though.) Queries of this sort rarely lead to any sort of definitive answer, are almost always posted by newcomers, rarely get answered (and could lead to frustration, if not with WordPress, at least with the support community), and sometimes reflect a lack of effort in searching the repositories ahead of time.

At least some sort of pre-defined reply with suggestions on how to search the plugin and theme repositories would be welcome.

We’re it up to me, such topics would be banned. Fortunately it is not up to me. 😉

I don’t think we need another rule or guideline as most people who ask those questions don’t necessarily understand how subjective “best” anything is.

That’s a good idea. What do you suggest?

I’ve seen many of these topics go unanswered, which might be by coincidence or it could be related to people not wanting to answer those topics. They’re just not satisfying to answer and personally it looks like they ask for other people to do their homework.

However, this is my pre-defined reply:

It’s always difficult to define functional requirements, but I recommend narrowing down what you want as much as you can. Then you can search the WordPress.org theme and plugin repository for that functionality.

Whenever I come across threads like that, if I know of a particular theme or plugin that does do exactly what they’re asking then I’ll find it and post a link, but if not; I just leave it.

I agree with @anevins approach as well, although it depends whether or not someone is that bothered enough to search.
