Since you also contacted me personally about this, I’ll reply here.

There is no specific set of rules (yet) that governs how one becomes a moderator for these forums.

In general, I would say that the moderators are people who have shown a commitment to the community for some time. This could be through answering questions, using the “modlook” tag to draw attention of existing mods to problem threads, maybe participating in discussions on the forum administration mailing list, and the like.

I can only speak for myself, but I’d be looking for that sort of “track record” over a period of time before I considered adding someone (not that I would, I’d leave that to folk like Chris and Sam who’ve been in the admin team longer than I have.)

Mailing list discussion for future requests of this nature:

mrmist – thank you for your feedback, I will continue to provide assistance on these forums.

How do I contact a moderator to delete a post?

You can add a “modlook” tag to the thread you want the post deleting in, along with a note to that effect, or you could just link it up here in this thread.

mrmist: I am also very grateful for your informative reply here. I posted a similar topic a while ago (here), and I got a similar (if slightly more ambiguous) answer.

One thing you said made me think, though:

This could be through answering questions, using the “modlook” tag to draw attention of existing mods to problem threads

I had been wondering about that. Is it possible to track the username of the person who attaches the “modlook” tag? In addition to determining the people who are supplying useful contribution to these forums, it would also discourage abuse of that powerful tag.

So, this is my question summarized: Is the “modlook” tag a good way to gain a “reputation,” if you will, in the community as a helpful member, or is it just a way to anonymously contribute to the usefulness and non-clutter of these forums?

Alas, nobody knows who adds a “modlook” tag — and no, adding a “modlook added by me” to the thread won’t curry favor 😉

It definitely is a wonderful contribution towards the health of the forums though.

    Thank you for responding, Chris_K.

Okay, so, if I understand correctly, the only reliable way to build an effective reputation for good service to the community is to provide good replies on people’s threads.

One another note, I know that mrmist mentioned the wp-forums mailing list. What kind of information, specifically, would one gain through being subscribed to that list?

Have a look at the archives and see if it interests you. 🙂 It typically isn’t a high volume list so safe to subscribe to.

I get the impression you’re looking for a checklist of sorts and I have to apologize, we’re just not that formal. It is casual, ad-hoc and we just try to help as we can.

Both work to the same end, do they not? 😉

or at least remove the link to the website i gave in first post.

i figured the problem myself and it is a meaningless one.
    thank you in advance 🙂

tag the post ‘modlook’ and we look at ’em.

    But. Per the Welcome: http://codex.wordpress.org/Forum_Welcome#Deleting_Posts

Please remember that it is not the general policy to delete forum posts. When a post is made and people contribute answers to an issue, that then becomes part of the community resource for others to benefit from and deleting posts removes this added value. In certain circumstances, members of the moderation team might be persuaded (for example, through free beer or bribery 😉 ) to remove sensitive information that has been included in posts accidentally – but your best course of action is not to publish anything that you wouldn’t want to be public. (Remember too that other sites take archive copies of the forums, and we can do nothing to control that.)

I removed your URL. Next time, if you don’t want it on the internet, don’t post it.

thank you! i’d really have that in mind next time! thank you once again.
