Support » Plugins » Forum integration – to bb or not to bb!

  • I have an looking into how to integrate a forum into a WP website, http://bbpress.org/ just seems a bit underdeveloped (no offence!). The issue seems to be login sync – there is issues with other ‘external’ forum solutions like phpbb.

I guess I could use a different stylesheet to render out categories to make it look more like a forum, kinda keeping everything all under one admin – what do you think?

  • Can’t help you much but to give you a link:

Also look into Vanilla – very customizeable:

How well does Vanilla integrate into WP?

Security always seems like such an issue when dealing with forums and having two admin interfaces and logins is not ideal for a user.

I’m just not sure of the best way to implement this – my friend really wants a ‘forum’ feature, but I think I could accomplish this with different stylesheets and a sprinkling of conditional statements just using WordPress and comments (with a few plugins under the hood of-course!).

Thanks!! Well, still not sure about Vanilla, I have used phpbb before and I know my way around it a-little.

I’m still just thinking about implementing a different stylesheet and using WP for the whole thing, at least I know where I am with it regarding development.

The security thing is a real concern to me – does anyone know much about Vanilla, it’s development and security implementation?

Looks like bbPress is not in the running anyway:

Quote from bb website – “Currently, when a user registers on your bbPress forum, your WordPress blog doesn’t know about it (and vice versa). The user will be created, but WordPress won’t know what user role to apply.

At the moment, integrating user registration more tightly will require a plugin both for bbPress and for WordPress. Hooks to look at include bbPress’ bb_new_user and bb_user_has_no_caps along with WordPress’ user_register.”

I’m suprised that bb integration with WP wasn’t one of the first things that got done on this project!

Please remember though, that WordPress had come first, and their main concern at that time.. was WordPress.. so, worrying about the integration of the two, was least on the mind most likely..

But, I’m sure before too long, or with a request over there at the bbpress.org site.. someone will make a plugin soon. 😉 =)

After getting this through the email box, and seeing their forums up now.. I’m going to lean more on bbpress now! Whee!!

If all possible, I’ll start working on making bbpress themes, like I had done for phpBB before, even though those weren’t the greatest.. =P I’ll try and make nice ones for bbpress though.. out with phpBB and in with bbpress!

Whoootwhooot! Nice timing there, looks like I’m going to use bbpress after all;) Im going to give this a go then over the next week. I’m so glad I have an alternative to PHPbb as I only have limited experience of it and it seems to be targeted by hackers.

And *hopefully* sometime soon here, there will be a way to import/convert from phpBB to bbPress. But, we’ll have to see though.. 😉

Whoops, hit a bit of a blockage and install has not worked – heading over to the bbPress forum to check it out!
