Support » Fixing WordPress » Formatting the most recent post differently

  • Hello everyone,

Here is one of my sites, currently run using Movable Type:

I want to change it across to WordPress – but how do I make it so the most recent post is formatted differently to the rest of the posts – like it is currently? I’m sure it must be something to do with The Loop, but I just can’t work it out…

  • It needs a bit of hacking but I havent done mine yet. I am thinking of running the loop twice. First time it will pick up one post only. Next time it does them all. Add the presentational markup to the template and we should be set.

I’ve tried running the loop twice – but I couldn’t figure out how to make the second loop *offset* so it didn’t just display the first post again…

This is so easy to do in Movable Type. I prefer WP in *every* other way – but this one thing is really annoying me 🙂

Sorry to be a pain, but does anyone have any idea?

I’m desperate to move all my sites over to WordPress, but until I figure this out I just can’t do it!

Well I have gone mine fixed up since I posted. I would move over to WP then do the hacking. That way folks can see it and help if it borks. You really do need to read the loop stuff in the codex. I use query post on the first loop for a single post from a single cat. On the second loop in a different zone on the blog interface 🙂 the loop does its normal thing. I use a cat excluder so it doesnt repeat.

Well, I’ve got a site that I’m developing at the moment that’s already hooked up to WordPress: (very rough – loads needs fixing, I know)

And here is how I want the front page to be in the end:

I’ve read through the loop stuff on Codex quite a few times; I understand how to get different categories displaying differently, but I just can’t work out how to get posts displaying differently purely depending on the order down the page. I realise this may well be because I’m a bit thick, though 🙂

Well my blog is in *development* so the CSS is a mess but the index.php which is what you need is pretty solid. Copy and paste then delete the intervening html.

Heck I have just seen where you are headed. This is going to be a lot easier for you if you get your very spiffy 3 columns fixed up first.

I’m also in the same spot as John, but I’ve noticed these posts are several months old. So I was wondering, have there been any updates since that time to allow this to be done with more ease in WordPress? Thanks.

Thank you Kafkaesqui! Most appreciated. ^^
