[Resolved] Formatting the home page summary of posts (Bold, paragraphs, hyperlinks)

  • Hi,

    My title says it all I think. I find the way the summary is laid out in iconic one quite confusing for the reader. All the text rolls into one paragraph, I cannot distinguish the date from the body of text with bold, a colour change, underlining etc as none of the formatting that applies to the article itself appears in the summary. Can this be changed? Can hyperlinks be highlighted, in fact can any change made to the article format be applied to the summary?
    An example of a summary would be as follows:

    Title: Cashless London buses

    Date: 27.02.2014 Buses in London will no longer accept cash payment for journeys from this summer, according to an announcement from (TfL) Transport for London. The organisation revealed that the number of journeys paid for with cash is set to drop to less than one per cent this year, with the Oyster card the favoured…..

    Just wanted to say this forum is fab as a number of my other questions have been resolved by reading other’s posts. Also that it really is suitable for a total novice, because I have never touched a piece of code in my life and I am trusting myself to change code with your help and it is working.

    Thank you

  • It would seem this summary text is also called an excerpt.

    @themonic

    To show full posts on home page instead of excerpt:

    Remove || is_home() from the following line

    <?php if ( is_search() || is_home() || is_category() || is_tag() ) : // Display Excerpts for Search, home, category and tag pages ?>

    It would become

    <?php if ( is_search() || is_category() || is_tag() ) : // Display Excerpts for Search, category and tag pages ?>

    it is line 44 of content.php

    After doing this you can use the <!–more–> tag in articles to break your posts for home page.

    Hi,
    Thank you for this and maybe I am not understanding you correctly but I still want the excerpt (summary) not the full post on my home page, I just want to be able to format that bit of text.

    I found the exact same answer you gave above on another post but it actually doesn’t answer my question.

    Thanks

    Try this plugin:
    http://wordpress.org/plugins/advanced-excerpt/ this should work for you.

    You can also search the plugin directory:
    http://wordpress.org/plugins/search.php?q=excerpts

    Thank you….. the first plug in listed I had already found and I didn’t implement it as it has a warning.

    ‘This plugin hasn’t been updated in over 2 years. It may no longer be maintained or supported and may have compatibility issues when used with more recent versions of WordPress.’

    What’s the worse that can happen??? I will try it anyway.
