• Hello

I recently updated to wordpress 5.5 and noticed the typed/text based emojis’ weren’t displaying on the bbpress/forum replies. Long story short after doing a search online which advised me to check the “writing settings” and look for the “formatting section” to see if the “convert emotiicons like 🙂 and 😛 to graphics on display” is checked. Upon checking i found the writing settings isn’t even displaying the formatting option.

The website is over a year old and never had this problem before until i upgrade to 5.5. It could also be a bug, idk. When i downgraded to wordpress 5.4.2 the emojis are displaying now.

Any help in how to make emojis visible in 5.5 is deeply appreciated. Thanks

Edit: It seems people have been noticing it since 2018 , here is a link to one such post https://wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/304297/convert-emoticons-like-and-p-to-graphics-on-display

  • Hi. Did you find a solution?

I have the same problem in WordPress posts (not BBPress).

I did tests on an empty installation, without any plugins installed, and the error appears as soon as I upgrade to WP 5.5.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi @efquintana

No i have not. No one even bothered to reply, not even a moderator. I would have thought this is related to a bug and someone from the developing team would be interested. If they advise and direct me where to get in touch with the developers i am willing to do that, but no response.

I am thinking if you started a post and linked it to this post maybe someone will pat attention, considering my post is no buried under so many new posts.

    Thank you.

I think it something to do with PHP. I upgraded from 7.3 to 7.4 here is the history of my command line.

    apt -y install lsb-release apt-transport-https ca-certificates
    wget -O /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/php.gpg https://packages.sury.org/php/apt.gpg
echo "deb https://packages.sury.org/php/ $(lsb_release -sc) main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/php.list
    apt update
    apt -y install php7.4
    apt install php7.4-{bcmath,bz2,intl,gd,mbstring,mysql,zip}
    systemctl restart apache2

That fixed it. It my of been the last line installing zip and things not sure what fixed it by itself.

So you could reinstall WordPress all you want would not fix this. It’s some setting in php.

    Good Morning.
    Thanks for the input.
I don’t think PHP is the problem.
I changed the version of my website to version 7.4 and the problem with emojis still remains 🙁

Not sure but it went back to how it was.

Used Webmen to uninstall php went under software packages on the left side.

Then did a search for php it came up with a lot but I just clicked on:

php-xml 7.4+79+0~20201210.30+debian10~1.gbpedaf15 P-T all DOM, SimpleXML, WDDX, XML, and XSL module for PHP [default]

Said to uninstall and click all settings and dependencies. It took a while but then came back and found no php at all in Webmin.

Then I reinstalled it like in the last 3 lines I said in the other post here.

It is working very good now.

So mainly had to uninstall php with all it’s setting too and reinstall it.

Got WordPress installed on a Nanopi-neo to backup my main WordPress and on Writing Settings Formatting did not appear I worked on it a lot did all I said in here and it did not work.

What made it work was when I copied the database from my main WordPress to it with “Import” ran the WordPress Importer after it was done then the Formatting showed up.

Not sure why. But wanted to post it here because that fixed it.

WordPress run’s putting good on this tinny Nanopi-neo. A little slow but not to bad.

Looks like this when I log in on the RS232 or can log in with SSH too.
