    I'm evaluating WordPress and took a look at the classic theme footer.php

    What I'm surprised by is that there are two closing </div> tags, should the first one be an opening tag?

    <!-- begin footer -->
    <?php get_sidebar(); ?>
    <p class="credit"><!--<?php echo get_num_queries(); ?> queries. <?php timer_stop(1); ?> seconds. --> <cite><?php echo sprintf(__("Powered by <a href='http://wordpress.org/' title='%s'><strong>WordPress</strong></a>"), __("Powered by WordPress, state-of-the-art semantic personal publishing platform.")); ?></cite></p>
    <?php wp_footer(); ?>

    No it is closing the container above the footer.

    My guess is that the first closing div closes something that is opened in (for example) the header, but that's just a guess. Try to remove it, your footer won't work.
