Follwing the track back thread

I have been following the thread. My function.php is correct. MY comments isn’t. there is a link on the posts that go to the page. In the are you creat posts it says allow ping and has an area to fill in track backs. Do I need to change the comments.php for there to be full functionality between myself and other bloggers, or will the ping back work if it is chacked, and the track back if it is filled in??
