I have a self-hosted WordPress site and used the follow button generator to give me code to enable me to have a Follow button (for other WordPress users) on my site. Until recent problems (may or may not have been caused by the recent Jetpack update) this button worked fine but then it stopped being visible. Checking if I could still create the code I got this message “Please check you’ve entered the address of a WordPress.com or Jetpack-powered site and try again.”

I am using Jetpack so I don’t know why it stopped working. Jeremy Herve recently fixed some problems for me (lost stats, and this also briefly solved my follow button problem) and I think that since then I have /wordpress at the end of my site name. If I use http://shortbookandscribes.uk/wordpress it creates the code but clicking on the button on my site does nothing. If I use http://shortbookandscribes.uk then the code doesn’t show anything on my site at all.

Can anybody help me please? I do have JSON API enabled. Thank you.

Could you try to use the button generator once again? The problem with your Jetpack settings was back, so I had to fix it again.

This makes me wonder how your site URL and WordPress address are set. Could you go to Settings > General in your dashboard, and let me know what you see there?

    Thanks!

The button generator is giving me a code now, thank you.

These are the URLs in the dashboard
    Site Address (URL): http://shortbookandscribes.uk
    WordPress Address (URL): http://shortbookandscribes.uk/wordpress

Do you use a plugin to force HTTPS in your dashboard, or that may change your site URL in some cases?

The only plugins I am using are Currently Reading, Easy Google Fonts, Jetpack and Limit Login Attempts.

I did have problems with the dashboard changing to HTTPS in WordPress. When going through some of the plugins and features it would come up with an SSL error as it seemed to randomly swap to it, and so we installed an SSL cert, so that it stopped causing an error.

Thanks for the extra details! Things should work from now on, but let me know if you ever experience more issues.

Since you already have an SSL certificate, it might also be good to fully switch to HTTPS. It’s becoming a more important part of the web, and will affect your search engine rankings starting next year:

    Moving Toward SSL

Once you make the switch, those problems you’ve been having will disappear.

To switch, you’ll need to start by changing your site address and WordPress address to use HTTPS. Then, you’ll want to force HTTPS in the admin by adding this line to your site’s wp-config.php file:
    define('FORCE_SSL_ADMIN', true);

Another alternative would be to install a plugin to take care of this for you, like this one:
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/really-simple-ssl/

You can read more about SSL and WordPress here:
    https://make.wordpress.org/support/user-manual/web-publishing/https-for-wordpress/

Let me know if you make the switch, and I’ll make sure your Jetpack settings are still correct!

Thanks so much for all your help. You’ve been brilliant. I’ll have a read of the links you have provided and will let you know if I switch.

Hi, would you believe the follow button doesn’t work again? I have done a new post on my blog – could it be that every time I go in and do something it breaks the button again?

It’s interesting. Your Jetpack settings were once again updated. I’ve changed them again, but we’ll need to find a more permanent solution. I’ve just emailed you with some more things we could work on together to get to the bottom of this.

Could you take a look and reply?

    Thanks!

    Hi!

Did you receive the email I sent on December 2? If so, could you take a look and reply when you get a chance?

    Thanks!

Hi, yes, I dealt with it immediately and did all that you asked me to do.
