Folding category list in Write window

    Seems to be “Category Day” around here… 😉

    OK, here’s my category question.

    Is there a way to display categories as a folded list in the Write window? I’m thinking of using categories to represent the sources of news items. The first level would be country name, the second would be publication name (e.g., USA-New York Times). This could add up to hundreds of categories at the second level—obviously not very manageable in the Write window.

    Any suggestions?

    I’m not understanding the term “foldable”. Are you talking about creating a drop down list for your categories on your Write Post Admin panel to accommodate your post categories?

    Or a javascript or drop down expandable CSS driven list of the categories that expand when you “hover” over them or something?

    Or something else completely, like a list for your users to choose your different categories from from the header or sidebar or something when they view your site?

    Exactly. A long list of several hundred categories would be unworkable — but a list of “parent” categories from which you’d select and then get a list of “child” categories would be fine.

    I’m looking at this article about possible new WP 1.6 features, and it looks like one of those collapsible doodads could do what I want.

    If so, they you will have a bit of wait ahead of you.

    It is several months from release.

    Meanwhile, SERIOUSLY consider limiting your categories. 😉

    Or write a plugin to do the same thing – or get a friend to. Others would probably love it.

    That’s fine. At this point, I’m just imagining possibilities. I’m not a programmer, so writing a plugin isn’t an option for me.

    I actually think that more powerful categories is something that many people might have applications for. The architecture is already there. All that’s missing is a user interface that makes employing them easier.
