    I’d like to ask you, if the folder “tests” is necessary for the plugin
   to work or if it could / should be deleted?

 * The folder isn’t necessary for the plugin to function. It’s the test suite used
   in development to ensure the plugin operates as expected even after changes are
   made.
 * You can delete the folder if you wish, but when you update to a newer version
   of the plugin it’ll get restored. Leaving the folder in place doesn’t pose any
   real issues for your site.
 * In the future I plan to omit the packaging of the test folder from the plugin
   releases.
