Fixed rate shipping for specific products

    In my store I sell multiple types of products. One specific type is extremely inexpensive to mail, and oftentimes that is all a customer will order. Is there a way to set it so that if a customer ONLY orders this specific type of product, that there is a “flat rate” option available? And if they order that product and another type, that it does not show up?

    I currently use the USPS calculator. I tried also using the “fixed rate” shipping and setting the product name to “specific product type orders only,” but without fail, customers don’t read, and they’d select it to get cheaper shipping despite ordering other product types as well.

    It would be nice if the flat rate option I want to offer only showed up if their cart only contained the products I specified, and did not show up if they had other products as well. I’m not certain if this is a feature already available in wp e-commerce and that I just don’t know how to set it up. 🙂

    Hi there,

    Ray here with WP eCommerce Support Team.

    I believe that we have a way to disable shipping for a product ( by checking on “this product will not be shipped to customers ). However we do not have a way to put in a cheaper rate for individual product. I am afraid you would need some code modification to do so.

    @suzzie526,

    It would be pretty straightforward to create a custom shipping gateway for your situation as long as the rules are as simple as they appear. A custom gateway could give a fixed quote if the number of products in the cart being in specific categories are fewer than a a configured count of products.

    If you want to go the route of creating the custom gateway I could guide you through it.
