• On 28/7 I couldnt load new images. Later that day recent images would no longer display. 29/7 9 images wouldnt display. I think that day I applied an Akismet and a Jetpack plugin update. 30/7 16 images wouldnt display, back to those uploaded 1st July. This was all on jemimapett.com, my author blog, running as a multisite, but I’ve since worked out I can’t do multisites because I don’t know enough to set it up properly.

1/8 I had another plug-in for jetpack to install, and it wouldnt complete. Then I got an error saying scheduled maintenance, come back soon.

2/8 I can log in, but the dashboard won’t load. The live site shows me logged in, but I cant edit posts or post new ones. The scheduled post went live on schedule, with broken links to the pictures.

I decided to check my other sites… princelings.co.uk will allow me to write new posts but not load any pictures. The Error message says the file is empty (but they display fine on my pc). There are three plugin updates waiting and I just did the Akismet one, for fear of everything going wrong like the other site.

Then I loaded a completely new installation for viridianseries.uk The only plugin added was akismet. It wouldnt load images saying:
File is empty. Please upload something more substantial. This error could also be caused by uploads being disabled in your php.ini or by post_max_size being defined as smaller than upload_max_filesize in php.ini.

I’ve checked messages on this part of the forum and on the new installations.

I tried reinstalling 3.9.1 on princelings and viridianseries – no change (cant do it for jemimapett as the dashboard won’t load – just get a blank page, not even with header bar showing user etc)

I tried rebuilding permalinks on the working sites too, since it worked for someone… no joy.

I’m very worried – I am an author not a programmer. I just follow your instructions, when I can understand them.

Does anyone have any useful ideas other than deleting the entire subdomain for jemimapett.com and starting again?

I hunted for that file php.ini in the host files today and couldn’t locate it.

Thanks to Jan Dembowski on another post, I looked at the files on my host, added the 0 to the akismet and jetpack plugin folders that were the last two to have been amended (the others were much older), to make them inactive. I got the dashboard back, although the images were still broken!

Then I removed the 0 from the akismet and checked it was active. All went well (although I had ten spam comments in that time!)

Then I tried reactivating jetpack but got an error message, which showed a certain file wasnt valid in another file being executed.

I checked the file list and found the file class.jetpack-admin.php wasn’t loaded. So I downloaded jetpack from the plugin site (to my pc) unpacked the zip file, and copied the class.jetpack-admin.php to the right folder by FTP.

Activating jetpack from the WP dashboard worked fine.

I still had broken images, but I found I could reload them. Sometimes reloading an image made the old version show up again, but sometimes not. I can’t see any reason for that, but out of 16 broken images about 10 resurrected themselves.

The only thing outstanding is that I have an error bar at the top of my dashboard saying that WordPress is trying to complete an upgrade – please click here to finish it. I reckon it’s stuck doing whatever it was doing, and it didn’t seem to want to complete before, so now I’m back working ok, I’m going to ignore it.

Thank you to everyone who talked me through on their own threads.

(Although admittedly I’ve only solved the problems with jemimapett.com, not my other sites yet.)
