• I recently finished my first WordPress theme. I wrote it only to learn WordPress, so it’s pretty spartan. I’m using the full theme on my personal site, and a stripped down version on my “professional” site. Any criticisms or advice would be appreciated. Just keep in mind it’s only a first attempt and is intentionally simple. My next theme will be more fully-featured.

  • It’s a good first attempt! A very minimalist theme, especially the professional version.

With any minimalist design, the typography becomes very important, so I would suggest spending some time fine tuning your font and text styles.

I would suggest increasing the leading of the text to give the design more breathing space. Particularly the line height of your text, but also the margin or padding of your lists.

A little more detail on the links would be advisable as well. Since they are all in red, it’s pretty obvious they are links. But I would think about adding hover states, even if the text just underlines or gets a touch darker, just to give the user feedback when they rollover a link. The links in the navbar could use more spacing, or some lines to divide them better.

Great start though, keep at it elfortunawe!

Thanks jleuze, that’s exactly the kind of feedback I was hoping for. I was actually on the fence about those very elements of the design, now I know which way to fall.

No problem, a fresh set of eyes can be helpful sometimes.
