Filter out specific category from beging displayed?

    is it possible to filter out an specific category section from being displayed on index and single files?

    if a post is included in “category1” i want an option to block this category from being displayed on the home page and on the single posts pages (unless they have the direct url to the post or comes directly from a tag page)

    Any ideas on how to make this happen?
