I would like to have a drop down menu to filter by category on the shop page. The dropdown should be populated by the categories in my store. It should sit next to the default drop down menu for sorting. I figure this should be straight forward.

Closest I got was adding a “Product Categories List” block when editing the shop page, but then it sits above/outside the products area, and selecting a category links to the actual category page. But I would rather it sit beside the sorting dropdown in the products area, and be a true filter that updates the page without reloading or linking to another page.

Only solutions I can find are to buy plugins or themes… but a filter seems like a basic feature… so is there something I’m missing?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

Thanks for the link. But it looks like that widget is placed in the sidebar, and I don’t have/want a side bar. I want the filter to appear above the products, right next to the sort dropdown. I don’t know of any way to place widgets there though the dashboard.

I followed this tutorial to create a widget area where I wanted it in the theme:
    https://qodeinteractive.com/magazine/add-widget-area-to-wordpress/

Then I just added a basic category widget to that area, which is sufficient for my needs at the moment.

@oaoyadeyi I am hesitant to install the “Classic Widgets” plugin for that legacy widget you sent, because it disables newer functionality and says “It will be supported and maintained until at least 2022, or as long as is necessary.” What are your thoughts on that?

    Hi @jonny-cakes,

Glad to hear you managed to find the right article that lets you create and customize a custom widget area on your theme. Thanks for sharing the link with us.

Well, it’s your choice to use the Classic Widgets plugin which will be supported and maintained until at least the end of 2022, if you deem it necessary. My advice is to use the default widgets included with WooCommerce core, so you can be sure they will be maintained along with future WooCommerce updates.

I’m going to close this thread out now. If you have any further questions, you can start a new thread.

    Stay safe!
