wav is an acceptable mime type by default with the self hosted version of WordPress. List of default file/mime types: http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/get_allowed_mime_types#Default_allowed_mime_types
If, on the other hand, you have a free site hosted by wordpress.com, then audio file extension aren’t allowed unless you use the Premium or Business hosting plan. https://en.support.wordpress.com/accepted-filetypes/
Right; I had seen this list previously, which is why I don’t understand why I am receiving the error message when I try to upload a wav file.
Is this your website? hippotential.com
That’s one of my sites; the one I am trying to get help on is http://www.pivotsmart.co.
Two basic troubleshooting steps you can take before diving into the unknown:
– Temporarily disable all of your plugins, and
– Temporarily apply the default WordPress theme.
Then try re-uploading the .wav file and see if the symptom or the error message changes at all. Make note of the message if it changes.
If you’re using any security plugins of any type, take into account any advanced security settings or features that may be capable of restricting uploaded content, as well. Also be mindful of not locking yourself out if you have to disable an active security plugin during testing.
