  • Hiya, this is my first post here, ive had a browse around and found a few answers to my querys so far but this one im not to sure about.

My site will be a multiuser content based site, so here are my questions:

    1) When people post, they get to choose what catagory they post in, is there any way to limit what pages they can post it? IE only admistrators can post in the news catagory but every other catagory they can post in.

    2) when you go to a catagory, say Ghillie Suits, instead of having blog after blog after blog of all the submitted content, is there a way this can be turned into a table of contents then users can select the blog/article they wish to read.

    3) Photogallery, I downloaded a plugin but dont doesnt really come with any documentation, what i would like to create is a gallery with several albums where people can choose an album to upload a photo, users will NOT be able to create an album (if the later isnt possible thats fine).

    4) Ive seen this question before but with no luck, new users registering dont get an email with their password, i have to set it manually, this wont be possible with the ammount of people im expecting to get to the site, the old flat based site had nearly 3k visitors in 2 months, even if half of those registered i wouldnt want to set the password for each user 😉

Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated, and i look forward in continuing to use this software, alternativly if any body knows any other blogging or content mangaging software which would be more suited to what ive asked then please suggest it.

  • 1. Limit Category plugin.
    2. Use category templates – you can make/style them any way you want:
    3. – [pass – I don’t do galleries, sorry]
    4. Check with your host. Ask about sendmail. If enabled and working WP should send the email.

    Thanks Moshu, speedy response.

Sendmail is working, as ive recived email to myself, and i use send mail on another php script on my flat website.

ill take a look at those plugins, cheers,

if anybody else can help with the gallery 😀

After installing the limit catagories, when i try to go to the catagories page in the my admin panel it doesnt view it only gives me the option to download it, if i disable the plugin, the page works fine again.

Did you set your options under Options, Limit Cats?

Also i have an External links section on the side bar (done through the admin panel) and again this is on the main page but not on any others. im confused, because surley if the information is contained in the sidebar.php how can it not be displayed when that page is included in another page.

Micheal H thanks, ive sorted the categories now, thanks for the help.

    Don’t be confused 🙂
A lot of themes use Conditional Tags to hide/display different portions on the sidebar depending on the view = i.e. what kind of “page” are you viewing.

Heh ok ill look through the conditional tags,

Ive also just done my first post of information, and its come on the front page which i want just for news, even though when i published it i only selected 1 category for it to be in, which is has done,

but how do i make the front page only display posts from the news category, im assuming its in the conditional tags? but i wouldnt know what to look for.

excellent sorted the problem with the links on the side bar disapearing.

now its just the external image but i think ive got an idea for that.

Wp, like any blogging tool – displays ALL your posts on the front/main page in chronological order, as it is expected from such a tool.

To limit which categories are shown… use a plugin:

    RYO ‘Category Visibility’ WordPress Plugin

Moshu, i think im going to have to hire you as my personal wordpress guru, you seem to know almost everything 😀 heh.

Really appreciate the help your giving, that plugin worked perfectly.

Not a guru… just spent too much time around here 🙂

I feel like such a noob asking all these questions,

So far, ive managed to in my categories made it so its snippets of information instead of the whole post, so people click on the head and they get taken to a page with the full post on, how ever on these pages the side bar isnt there, now taking into account what you said earlier about conditional tags, and doing what i did to get the links shown on every page, i added the tags to all the bits i could see they go to, but the side bar doesnt appear.

i think this is because the side bar isnt included in the writing on the file when its displayed to the viewers, how ever i dont know the file so i cant add the include.

heres a link to the page:

It’s not that simple – actually, nothing is simple with the default theme.
By design, it doesn’t show the sidebar on the “single post view”. You cannot just add the sidebar, because – if look at it carefully – the single view uses a different width for the content area.

Your choices: get another theme that is much easier to tweak (K. is a nightmare!), or get the All Sidebar Edition of the theme: it’s somewhere there >

    And here ends my knowledge… I don’t do K.

Ah ok, ill take a look at the themes that are available,

    cheers again.
