In the base plugin, I’m planning to keep the featured image behavior the same. But there will be a premium add-on (in the works) that will have more options.

Unfortunately, it’s more complicated than it might sound. There’s not a “one-size-fits-all” configuration for displaying the featured image. With some sites and featured images, it won’t look good resized to the original proportions, and others could have issues depending on the dimensions of the featured image. There are a bunch of different options – not to resize the image, to resize the image so that the whole image appears in its original proportions, to resize the image so that it preserves the original height but cuts off the side (i.e. for really wide images, it would be too thin on mobile), to keep a minimum height, etc.

The premium add-on will accommodate all of these possibilities. Due to the amount of work to build, test, and to support these features, there will be a small cost for the add-on to help cover updates and support. I expect to have that ready in the near future.
