Could you be more specific? Different themes and plugins will go about creating or setting featured images in different ways. Themes based on or similar to the WordPress “annual” themes will adopt the category image in just the way you describe. Some theme and plug-in creators have their own ideas, and you’d have to modify their work to use this plug-in.
So, you say that many themes will automatically add the featured image here?

No, I was referring to actual display. Where a theme or plug-in calls for featured images, but the given post, page, archive, etc., doesn’t provide one, this plug-in will display what is in effect a substitute featured image.
I have developed a version of the plugin that DOES let users optionally save (or assign) the substitute image as post featured image, rather than providing it on page load only. The successor plug-in includes other features, but not all have been completely worked out. I may update this plug-in with that option and perhaps one or two more, rather than wait until the successor is complete in all aspects.
Thanks for the reply.
That’s great to hear, please push the update to the repository if you can, I’m looking forward to try it π
– still haven’t had the time to test and push out an updated version of the plug-in or the successor, but am marking this thread resolved for now –
Alright, is there any estimated ETA of the update?
I wish I could give you more specifics, but, aside from the normal real world intrusions on my unpaid development time, I’ve also recently had to deal with having to jettison and re-create my entire development environment. Will get to it as soon as I can, I promise!
I see, take your time π
By the way, I forgot to ask you before…
Can you please take a look at the Elementor page builder, since it’s also so popular, and try to add compatibility for it if possible?
For example, in Elementor edit mode, the categories featured images do not appear.

An assigned post image probably will appear. As for an on-the-fly image, I’m not sure. I’ll look at it when I’m looking at another recent question about Ajax-enabled themes.
If you feel like beta testing the successor plug-in, let me know. It will include the assigned image function – so you can, so to speak, freeze the on-the-fly thumbnail/featured images as “real” featured images (and remove the assignment, too).
Sure, I’m interested π
Sorry for the delay getting back to you, and thanks for your offer. Here’s a link to a download file. Please exercise all usual cautions with a beta file, especially if you’re going to try it out on a production site: Have a backup ready!

I’ll be curious to see, if you’re still willing, how it handles your issues.
Thanks a lot for the beta link π
I will try it out once I sort out some other issues I’m currently having and let you know!
