I discovered a bug with the featured image headers if you use Custom Structure on permalinks for instance /%category%/%postname%/

where the featured image will not display as a header image.
The images will not go to the header even after switching the permalinks back to something more conventional. Even on new posts.

I tried spinning up a new site and importing the posts with no permalink settings and the images display just fine.

also i think if the images are too small they won;t show up. not sure if this in the documentation anywhere.

That is really strange. I can’t imagine that there is anything in the theme that has anything to do with the permalink settings. However, your images must be at least 1171px wide (1600px recommended) for the featured image to appear in the header. The idea being that smaller featured images are just meant to be used for post thumbnails.

I’ll mark this as closed, but if you can share more details about the permalink issue, I’ll be happy to help.

well yes i “fixed” the issue — but just as a FYI:

I set up the site with the “normal” permalinks of %postname%/
but as the site is for a musician I decided to use post categories to sort the content rather than custom post types and the permalinks as /%category%/%postname%/

after I made the changes to the permalinks the featured image will not display as a header image. I tested on a new version of the site from scratch and had the same results.

I would like to help discover how this occurs so that it won’t affect others. So, if there are any other questions let me know.

Still had issues. however i solved it.

not sure why but when photon is enabled in jetpack the featured image stops working.

Hmmm. So the Jetpack Photon feature was the issue all along? I love that Automattic has released Jetpack for self-hosted sites, but I have found that its pretty aggressive in taking over various WordPress hooks and applying some very specific CSS. So it can be a bit difficult to play nice with it. I absolutely want to make sure nothing I do conflicts with it, though.

I’ll have to look into this particular issue. Photon is a CDN and my whole logic for full-width featured images is based on being able to get the image width. Its possible that the image width is not properly being returned from a third-party (“cross-domain”) server.

I still don’t get any association with the theme as it relates to permalinks because I don’t do anything with them, but I’m definitely relying on image meta data in the theme to control how it works.

Right. When I initially added featured images the theme worked fine but if i made any change to permalinks or the default header then only the default header would display. AS soon as i disabled photon everything works fine. I tested it on two different instances of my site.

I’m just not familiar with how Photon works, sorry. But as for the theme, any large featured image on a page should override the otherwise site-wide “custom header image”. If not, it may be a bug that I’ve fixed in the next version (v1.6) but I thought I fixed that back in one of the v1.4.x releases.
