 * WordPress Core adds images via Upload and from the Media Library. For 2 years
   now I’ve been waiting for WordPress to add the option of a featured image via
   a url link (external url or from file server). Please incorporate this in the
   next WordPress version.

 * This sounds like a feature that is appropriate to be added as a plugin rather
   than in WordPress core. In fact there is a plugin which looks like it should 
   enable you to achieve this:
