• Hi

My featured images are (predominantly) the same aspect ratio as the recommended 1980×1485. However when using cover template the image is cropped depending on which screen size is being used.

A focal point like that used in the cover block is really needed for images that actually contain content so said content can be focused on. This would also translate to how the image is displayed when sharing in other mediums I assume?

Example linked, on a 1920×1200 screen for example the top of the bicycle is cropped.

Hopefully this can be incorporated into the theme. But if anyone knows a way of doing this manually per featured image please let me know. I don’t know code but can follow instructions adding stuff in where necessary.

    Thanks

  • The notion of a featured image is a rather difficult one. It would seem that the designers of the WP themes see the featured image as a decoration, something that has to do with content, but does not convey content as such. This happened with theme twenty seventeen in a big way with the header image on the front page, and that lack of clarity of definition seems to be happening here.

I would suggest using a plain image if you are using an “infographic” type of content, for instance, a powerpoint slide. You can define the size of the image on all media, and you won’t lose detail on loading to a small device (You may not be able to see the image easily on very small devices, but the question is, ‘Are you writing/designing your page for a small device?’.)

I am sorry if this does not help with this particular problem, but I hope it may clarify the use of images in the future.

Thanks @stilman-davis but it doesn’t help. From your description I should consider the featured image as more of a graphic that doesn’t feature any content.

I hope someone from WordPress/Twenty Twenty sees this and considers that actually some may want the featured image to actually be an image with content, and being a responsive theme that it is able to respond.
