I think it would be REALLY NICE if there were a way built right into WordPress’ content editor, to add a hover tooltip to links while they’re being created.

A tip like “this link will download a (file type) from (source)” or “this link will take you to (another page on this site/to a different site)” will help readers and users decide whether they want to click on a link.

I know there is now a plugin to do this, but it’s really a basic function and would be much nicer to have it part of WordPress. When a site uses too many plugins, things get complicated and even slow site functionality.

Let’s consider adding this cool feature to WordPress!

It actually used to be a part of WordPress and was removed, hence the plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/restore-link-title-field/

    The discussion was at http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/28206

It’s unlikely that this will be making a return to WordPress core.

This is not true. Speed is not a question of the number of plugins, but of their complexity.

You can have dozens of simple plugins and they will have virtually no impact. But one complex plugin can slow things down dramatically.

It’s all code. It’s the same code whether it’s built into WordPress or whether it is in a plugin. WordPress internally implements most of its own functionality in the exact same way a plugin would do it. There is no fundamental difference.
