Support » Plugin: Options for Twenty Seventeen » Feature Request – Fixed Width control of Main Menu

    Hello Oliver, At one point you asked about feature requests. I have put together four websites using the default Twenty Seventeen WordPress theme and your most excellent Options for Twenty Seventeen.

    After working with several installations there is an aspect which lacks a control.
    I know that full width and fixed width can be selected.

    However, I don’t see a control to make the Main Menu, Home Page Content, Single Column Page Content, Post with Sidebar and Footer all the same width. Frequently websites have a full width header and footer but the center sections are boxed or a defined width. Frequently people box the content to be between 1200px and 1350px wide.

    I would like to add to the Feature Request List a control to set all five of these to the same width. It does not matter as much the specific width as long as it is between 1200 and 1350px and that all five are the same width. (Main Menu, Homepage Content, Page Content, Post with Sidebar, and Footer).
    Thanks again!

    Hello,

    I think what you are asking already exists in the following option …

    “Customiser – General Options – Page Max Width”

    Please let me know.

    Hello Oliver, Good point, however that boxes the whole site to 1200px including the header and footer area. Some people prefer the header and footer to be full browser width (Main Menu boxed within a full width navigation bar). Also, in the Content Options / Primary Content Area Width there is a slider but in my installations I do not see that it is working.
    I use the css:
    @media screen and (min-width: 30em)
    {
    .page-one-column .panel-content .wrap {
    max-width: 1100px;
    }
    }
    This css works pretty well to change the page content width, however it does not change the footer width. The full, edge to edge, browser width footer looks great as it is with the widgets boxed within the full width footer, however it would be just a little better if the widgets could be adjusted to be the width of the page content.

    If I could send a screenshot with drawing it would be easier to describe.

    I have had a few people look at these sites and everyone seems to really like the appearance of them and your plugin surely makes this easy. I don’t want to sound like I am splitting hairs because your plugin does work really well. This is a suggested feature and not a trouble ticket. Thanks for all your help!

    Sounds to me like you’re asking for a “full width footer” option as per the “full width header” option and for the “full width content” option to no longer affect the footer?

    I will add this to the list.

    Hello Oliver, Almost. Is there a way to upload or send over a image file or screenshot?

    If you upload an image to a site you could link to it here?

    https://www.temporaryserver11.com/uncategorized/full-width-vs-fixed-boxed-1200px/ I have posted a screenshot with some notes on the picture. Especially, please view the bottom of the picture pertaining to the footer. The footer and header areas are the current concern.

    Thanks for the 4 footer column option.

    OK, interesting, I see what you mean now.

    I’m going to start development of this soon. I think what you want is possible and will do my best to satisfy your requirements.

    OK, that’s done!

    Please take a look at the latest update and let me know if the ability to independently control the page, nav, content and footer widths (via drop downs) sorts out what you wanted?

    I didn’t add the 30em and 20em sizes as I can’t believe anyone would actually want to use them.

    Hello Oliver, I agree to skip the 30em and 20em. I choose the 75em 1200px for both the header and footer from the new drop down menus.

    However, it did not seem to affect the header or footer width.

    I deactivated and activated the plugins and switched themes and switched back, but not change.

    I think you are on the right path, and I really appreciate you focusing on this task. You probably did not expect this plugin to become a full time project when you launched it.

    I also deleted the custom css and still the main navigation and footer areas were not affected.

    Please take another look at this one. Thanks

    You will find separate controls for width of page, header, nav, content and footer within the relevant sections in the Customiser.

    For example, if you go to “Customiser – Footer Options”, you will find a “Footer Width” drop down.

    Hope this does what you’re looking for.

    I’ve just had a look at the site you mention and the footer is set to 75em but it looks like you’re using custom css to set the content width to 1200px?

    Hello Oliver, The most recent update seems to have solved this. The footer is displaying almost 1200px. It is close enough. The page content is still a little wider for some reason, but close enough.

    I did have custom css for the homepage content width, but with today’s update the homepage content width can be set using your drop down menu.
    Thanks for getting this done!

    (@domainsupport)

    OK, I think something odd happened to the update, glad it’s all sorted now.

    I’m going to look into why the various sections of the site display different widths when they are set the same. I think we’ll find it’s padding / margin options. I’ll put it on the list to get sorted.

    Marking this thread as resolved now.

    Oliver
