But if you don’t feel confident enough to try it might be best leaving it for now.

Actually, having thought about it I really think you should give a try at writing your first small plugin, if you want custom keywords this is going to be necessary with the new code anyway.
If you upload a plugin with errors in on more recent versions of WordPress you will get error messages on activation without taking down your site so you can’t really mess things up too badly.
You can always delete the plugin file from the server to restore your site too.
