favicon.ico inconsistent display across browsers

  • Hi,

I’ve been attempting to install a favicon.

I have installed the favicon.ico file into the go daddy host file manager under ‘parent directory’ and also in the theme subdirectory.

Firstly, the icon displayed in the opera tab but not location bar and safari location bar, but not at all in IE7 or Firefox.

Attempting to over write the icon with a different image means I now have one icon in opera and different one in safari. Still nothing in IE7 or Firefox. (I’ve tried clearing all caches).

I’ve also installed a plug-in ‘admin favicon’, to no effect it seems.

I’d like the favicon to appear in the tabs and book marks.

I have not tried using this code in the web pages head section : <link rel=”shortcut icon” href=”<?php bloginfo(‘stylesheet_directory’); ?>/favicon.ico” />

I am using a child theme. If I do use this code should it go in the child or parent theme?

    Any suggestions gratefully received
    Thanks
