Trying to add a favicon in the Customizer is completely confusing me!

Do I just upload one .ico image and WordPress 4.3+ converts it into the right size favicon for all the different platforms, browsers, operating systems, and mobile devices?

If so, what size .ico do I upload? 512 x 512px?

In the Customizer, for the “Touch Icon (iOS and Android)” and the “Tile Icon (Microsoft)” are those supposed to be .ico or .jpg?

Thanks for any clarification you can give.

    Hi,

The image should ideally be 512px wide and tall as a square (or higher, but that’s the ideal minimum size), and should be uploaded as a jpg or png file (ico files aren’t supported because we can’t manipulate them to fit all the sizes, and they also don’t work too well on retina devices).

I’m not quite sure where you are seeing the options for Touch Icon and Tile Icon though, this sounds like something implemented by a plugin, the site icon feature added by WordPress it self is under Settings > Customizer > Site Identity, and is a single image field where you can upload or choose the image that will be used on all devices 🙂
