I am unable to get my favicon to update on the front-end. When I remove and add a new image it updates immediately on the back-end but won’t change from original HostGator icon on front-end. To change I have been doing Appearance -> Customize -> Site Identity and then uploading the image there for the Site Icon. The images I have used are all 512 x 512 pixels.

From researching this topic, I have seen many people advising to clear your cache. I tried this by doing “Delete Cache” in the WP Super Cache Settings and it did not work.

I also found one person saying to remove this line of code:
    <div id=”fb-root”></div>
I tried that and it did not work and I have added it back. My understanding is that line of code is related to the Facebook widget I have in my sidebar.

This is my first WordPress site and I am working on getting all the functional/design parts figured out before creating the real content of the site.

    Thanks!

Open your site via FTP or in the hostgator control panel. Look for a file named “favicon.ico” and, if there, delete it.

Have you cleared your browser cache? Hit Ctrl+F5 to fully refresh your site.

I currently see a green favicon, is this the old or new favicon?

sterndata – How do I open site via FTP? I could not find the file in hostgator.

ThemeSumo – The green favicon is the new image that I uploaded. I previously cleared my browser cache (Chrome) and it did not update. I am using a different computer now and just did the refresh and cleared browser cache (Chrome) and it still did not updated. However, it did update for Internet Explorer (before it showed the IE icon).

Why would it show on your end and on my Internet Explorer but not my Chrome?

All browsers are different, I would wait for a little longer (overnight) and it should begin to appear for everyone on all browsers.

To access your site using FTP just install any FTP client, use the login information provided to you by your host, and you can browse/download your theme files.

You have the hostgator alligator favicon here: http://thebudgetboy.com/favicon.ico

Most browsers automatically load the favicon.ico file if it is in the domain’s root directory. You need to delete this file or replace it with an image that looks like what you want. In my case Firefox did load the green man icon as the code in the page’s source took precedent.

Oh, can use something like https://www.icoconverter.com/ to make a .ICO file.

I couldn’t figure out how to delete the favicon.ico file myself but had hostgator support do it for me. Now that file is blank.

I downloaded and installed Filezilla but couldn’t figure out how to actually login. The login information hostgator provided did not work.

I changed the green man icon to a purple man icon to test and it immediately updated on the back-end. On someone else’s internet explorer it immediately updated but both my Chrome and other person’s Chrome still show hostgator alligator favicon.

I will see tomorrow if Chrome has updated.

24 hours later and Chrome stills shows the hostgator alligator icon. Would Chrome really take this much longer to update than other browsers?

I figured it out. I was able to acquire FTP login information and logged in to FileZilla. There was a backup favicon file named bak.favicon.ico which I deleted and uploaded my own favicon.ico file.

This immediately updated the favicon on Chrome.
