Support » Fixing WordPress » Fatal Error: Out of memory

  • I know this has been covered many times, but I can’t find one solution as to how to fix it.

    Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 31719424) (tried to allocate 223627 bytes) in /homepages/21/d335407014/htdocs/wp-includes/wp-db.php on line 850

    The first time I got the ‘Fatal error’ message, was when I tried to update to wp 3.0.2. However, I manually installed 3.0.2 via ftp and got that working fine. Now, whenever I try to install plugins I get the same message, but always pointing to a different directory or line in the directory where I need more memory.

    It seems everywhere offers the same solutions;

    Open the php.ini file in a text editor like TextPad (not in Notepad) and change the values for memory_limit. By default you should see memory_limit = 8M. Try changing it to 12M. If it doesn’t work, increase it to 16M or even 24M and so on.

    2. In case you can’t find the php.ini file or do not have access to it, then open up the file which was throwing the error (admin.php in my case) and add a line below just after ini_set(’memory_limit’, ‘12M’);

    3. You can even consider adding a line in .htaccess file which will resolve the issue.
    php_value memory_limit 32M

    4. Or else, Try adding this line to your wp-config.php file:
    Increasing memory allocated to PHP
    define(‘WP_MEMORY_LIMIT’, ’32M’);

    This seems to have worked for some, but not all, and there seem to be no other solutions.

    >I am with 1and1 and have spoken to them. They say I have a 30M limit, and with only 12 plugins, all very basic, I do not believe I could be anywhere near this limit.

    >1and1 do not allow access to the php.ini file. I have tried to create my own and place it in various places with no luck.

    >I have also edited the .htaccess file with no luck, only lots of ‘error 500’s’ when I try to access anything.

    >I have had some luck inserting ini_set(’memory_limit’, ‘24M’); in various places of the directories lacking memory, but only in changing the line that the ‘fatal error’ message points me at in that directory.
    (I have also tried the memory limit at all values from 12, 24, 30, 32, 64, 128 and none work!)

    >editing the wp-config.php file has no effect at all.

    Please help, this is driving me crazy.

    Thanks in advance

  • You might consider switching to a host who allows you enough RAM to run the program you want to run (WordPress).
