# Fatal error on installation

 * Thank you for making this plugin!
 * Unfortunately, I get the following error upon installation:
 * `Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '[', expecting ')' in /var/www/virtual/
   legallyg/html/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/uberbar/plugin.php on line 38`
 * I tried to fiddle around with the brackets on and around line 39, but just ran
   into further fatal parsing errors.
 * Any idea how I could solve this?

 * Your PHP version is older than 5.4. The default version on Uberspace is currently
   5.5. You should [update immediately](https://uberspace.de/dokuwiki/development:php#php-version_einstellen),
   because 5.3 doesn’t get any security updates anymore.

 * Thanks so much for your swift reply! Of course, this fixed it, and I should have
   updated PHP earlier anyway. 🙂
